The Under 13 A team played out a cracking tie with Westport United A in glorious sunshine at United Park yesterday evening.
Town started like a train and were a goal up inside two minutes thanks to a converted penalty. A second goal before 10 minutes had elapsed suggested it might have been a comfortable evening for the boys in blue, but nothing could have been further from the truth.
Westport had already served notice of their danger with a cross that looked like drifting into the net before a great intervention by the Town ‘keeper, and they continued to get some joy down the wings as the half wore on.
That said, Town were dangerous on the break and had a few great chances to extend the lead further.
They weren’t availed of, however, and when Westport reduced the arrears on the stroke of half-time it seemed to alter the whole course of the game.
The United equaliser arrived early in the second half and the home side went on to create a number of great chances. They forced one outstanding save from the Town ‘keeper and could only watch on in wonder when a shot resulted in the ball hitting one post and then rolling across the goal-line and hitting the other post before it was cleared away.
Town were mostly on the back foot as a strong home side drove at them from every angle, but they had some good moments going forward too as they contributed handsomely to a great game of football.
In the end they could reflect on a game they might have won but should probably have lost and come to the realisation that a draw wasn’t a bad result at all!
